India Among Fastest Improvers in Global Energy Transition, Climbs to 70th Position: WEF Report

The World Economic Forum Energy Transition Index 2026 highlights a global slowdown in energy transition readiness amid geopolitical risks. India, however, emerges as one of the fastest improving nations, rising to 70th position. The report notes strong growth in renewable energy jobs, infrastructure expansion, and clean energy strategies driving the shift.

New Delhi, Agency: Amid rising geopolitical risks, global progress on energy transition readiness has slowed for the first time in more than a decade. However, India has emerged as one of the strongest improving nations in the sector, according to the Energy Transition Index 2026 released by the World Economic Forum.

The report shows that Sweden, Finland, and Denmark have retained the top three positions in the global ranking. India has moved up two places to reach 70th position, marking one of the fastest improvements globally in energy transition readiness. The gains are attributed to rapid expansion in infrastructure, improvements in equity, sustainability, and increased financial investments.

The report highlights a significant expansion in low-carbon employment in India. In 2024, the share of jobs linked to low-carbon sectors increased by 24 percent. Employment in the renewable energy sector rose by 25 percent compared to 2023, reaching 1.3 million jobs, with hydropower identified as the largest source of employment within the sector.

India’s clean energy strategy is driven by the expansion of renewable energy capacity, strengthening of the electricity grid, and a growing focus on green hydrogen development. These policy directions have contributed to the country’s improved performance in global energy transition preparedness.

At a broader level, the report notes that the global energy system is becoming increasingly fragmented and security-oriented, as countries attempt to balance sustainability, affordability, and resilience. Emerging economies accounted for nearly 80 percent of the increase in global energy demand, while continuing to face structural challenges such as high financing costs and infrastructure deficits.
